Warm Minimalist: grading vertical video with LUTs

The fastest way to make short-form video feel intentional isn't a new camera — it's a consistent colour grade. A good LUT gets you most of the way in one click.

A LUT (look-up table) is a colour recipe: feed it your footage and it remaps the tones to a target look. It won't fix bad exposure, but on decent footage it instantly delivers a cohesive, recognisable feel across every clip.

Why "Warm Minimalist" works for short-form

Reels, TikToks and Shorts are watched small and fast. Heavy, stylised grades fight the content; a warm, slightly desaturated, clean look flatters skin tones and reads well on any phone screen. Consistency is the brand — when every clip shares one grade, your feed looks designed.

Using LUTs without overcooking

• Apply, then dial back. Drop the LUT, then reduce its intensity to taste — 60–80% is usually plenty.
• Expose first. Correct brightness and white balance before the LUT; it expects neutral input.
• Keep skin honest. If faces go orange, ease off. A grade should flatter, not tint.

LUTs in .cube format work in Premiere, DaVinci Resolve, Final Cut and CapCut — the same file, the same look, across tools. That portability is why presets beat re-grading every project by hand.
